Solid wood, veneer, or softwood — what you're really buying
Three pieces can look almost identical in a showroom and cost wildly different amounts. The difference isn't the surface. It's what lies beneath it — and how long it lasts.

When you're choosing a piece of furniture you hope to keep, the single biggest decision isn't the shape, the finish, or even the brand. It's the material underneath. Two tables can look identical under showroom lights and be built from completely different things — one that lasts a lifetime, one that lasts a house move. Here is how to tell them apart, in plain terms.
The short version
Solid wood is exactly what it says — the same timber all the way through. Veneer is a thin slice of real wood over engineered board underneath. Softwood, like pine, is solid wood too, but from fast-growing, low-density trees — lighter, cheaper, and far easier to dent. That single distinction — solid wood versus everything else — decides how the piece feels, how it survives daily life, and whether it can be resurfaced or is simply replaced. Everything below is that idea, explained.
Solid wood
The dense, slow-grown timbers we use for furniture are the same material through their entire thickness. There is no surface layer to wear through, because the surface is the wood, and so is everything beneath it.
This is what makes solid wood repairable. A deep scratch, a dent, a worn edge — all of it can be sanded back and refinished, because there is always more wood underneath. It's also what gives the piece its weight and its silence: a solid wood table doesn't rattle, flex, or sound hollow when you knock it. It carries generational furniture — the pieces that get handed down — for exactly this reason.
The trade-off is honest: solid wood costs more, weighs more, and takes real skill to work. But you are paying for the whole thing, not a thin layer of it.
Veneer over engineered board
Veneer is a thin slice of real wood — a few millimetres — bonded over a core of engineered board: plywood, MDF, or particleboard. The face you see and touch is genuine wood. The structure holding the shape together is not.
Veneer isn't a lesser material — it's a different one, with real strengths. It's lighter, more dimensionally stable across large flat panels, and far kinder to hinges and hardware than heavy solid timber. For cabinetry in particular, that matters. In fact, we use it ourselves: on many of our cabinets and consoles, the outer faces are solid wood while the interior carcass is plywood with a matching veneer. Solid hardwood on a tall cabinet door can be too heavy for hinges to carry gracefully over years of use — so we build where solid wood belongs, and use ply-and-veneer where it genuinely performs better. That's not a compromise; it's choosing the right material for each part of the piece.
What veneer can't do is take a lifetime of resurfacing. Because the real wood is only a few millimetres deep, once it's worn through, chipped at an edge, or lifted by moisture, you reach the board beneath — and that can't be sanded back or refinished. A solid wood surface can be brought back again and again; a veneered one, once its face is gone, is gone. Which is exactly why we reserve solid wood for the surfaces that take the wear.
Softwood, like pine
Softwood — pine, fir, and others from fast-growing trees — is still solid wood, and it has a warmth and lightness that suits some pieces well. The honest issue isn't the label; it's density. Softwoods tend to be low-density, which means they dent under a dropped bowl, scratch under a dragged chair, and wear at the edges far faster than a dense timber.
They can be repaired — they're solid, after all — but on a hard-working piece like a dining table, the marks collect faster than you can tend them. For light-use or decorative pieces, softwood is a sensible, affordable choice. For the furniture at the centre of daily life, it struggles.
A quick word on names, because they mislead. "Hardwood" and "softwood" are botanical terms about the kind of tree, not a reliable guide to how hard the wood actually is. Some so-called softwoods are tough; some hardwoods are soft. What matters for furniture is density — how much the wood resists a dent — not which botanical box it sits in. When we choose a timber, that's what we're really weighing.
How each one ages
This is the part you can't see in a showroom, so here it is plainly — the same table, the same ten years, three materials.

So which should you buy?
The honest answer is that it depends on the piece. For a decorative or occasional piece, softwood can be exactly right. For cabinetry and storage, veneer over ply is often the better engineering choice — which is why we use it ourselves where it belongs. Matching the material to the job is simply good making.
But for the pieces at the heart of a home — the dining table you'll gather around for decades, the surfaces that take daily life — you want solid wood. It's the one material of the three that can be resurfaced again and again, that deepens in character rather than tiring, and that you could one day pass on.
