A Windsor is a way of building, not a look. Everything begins at a solid wooden seat. The legs socket into it from below, the spindles rise from above, and every joint is locked with a wedged tenon that pulls tighter each time the piece is sat in.

The seat and the spindles are joined at different moistures, so as the wood settles, the joint locks further of its own accord. There is no nail and no screw anywhere in it; take the spindles away and there is nothing left to sit on, which is the whole of the argument.

The form is centuries old because it has never needed improving. What we have done is quieten it – the logic kept, the lines eased for rooms lived in now.
